I don't remember seeing many 720K drives or disks. Had a couple in a cheap NEC laptop from 1987, though.

Also, I think both the media and the drives got less reliable as they got cheaper.

Ain't that the truth...

5.25" 1.2 megabyte floppies were the worst, I think. There were serious interchange problems between 1.2 megabyte and 360K drives.

That was true in the early (1984-1986) days, but after that the interop problems were resolved.
