mutt has no trouble reading gzipped mboxes. :-)
# Use folders which match on \\.gz$ or \\.bz2$ as [gb]zipped folders:
open-hook \\.gz$ "gzip -cd %f > %t"
close-hook \\.gz$ "gzip -c %t > %f"
append-hook \\.gz$ "gzip -c %t >> %f"
Those are all default supplied mutt options. I've a cron job that
regularly appends mbox contents to existing gzipped archives.
