My advice would be not to use /dev/modem. Call all of your serial
devices by their "real" name, e.g. /dev/ttyS1.
Then set up all of your programs that use a serial device refer to
/dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS1, etc. This way when a program locks a device you'll
know exactly what's being locked as all of the programs are set to the same
device.
