Olá Raul. Eu estou usando a wi-fi intel 3945 sem problemas. Estou
rodando Sid, kernel 2.6.25-2-686.
O primeiro passo foi desinstalar o pacote firmware-ipw3945 e instalar o
firmware-iwlwifi.
Depois deste procedimento, precisei fazer umas pequenas gambiarras para
usar a placa de rede.
Sempre que tentava configurar o IP, retornava msg de erro dizendo não
ter encontrado o gateway padrão ou algo parecido. O resultado é que a
placa era reconhecida mas eu não conseguia nem mesmo pingar as outras
máquinas da rede.
Minha gambiarra é um scipt em /etc/init.d:

## Script para reiniciar a rede
#
/sbin/route del default
/etc/init.d/networking restart
#
## FIM ##
E um link em /etc/rcS.d/ apontando para o script.
Foi como funcionou e está funcionando.
