This will use the original CM fonts (Computer Modern fonts by DEK), for
which no type1 fonts are available in Debian (yet). Could it be that you
installed type1 fonts from CTAN or a mirror (cm-super or lmodern) and
followed the instructions to include them into a Debian system (using
/etc/texmf/updmap.d/10cm-super.cfg or similar)?

However, you probably overrode the Debian updmap mechanism by
providing a hand-taylored updmap.cfg somewhere. After the purge, the
mechanism worked again.

This is just suspicion. But anyway, since it now works on a freshly
installed tetex system, can we close this bug from your point of view?

If yes, we would need to find out more about the problems of the
original submitter, especially if they still persist with the new updmap
mechanism. Chris, do you listen?
