That does indeed look very much like my bug, and when I apply that patch
the problem appears (on limited testing) to go away. I only ever
discovered it because running a shell script (which calls dvips) from
Vim over an SSH session happened to accumulate the "magic" number of
variables, so it's a rare problem, as the previous submitter noted ;-)
