I'm not clear about what you're saying -- are you saying that
you've increased the value of save_size in /etc/texmf.cnf to
40000, and TeX won't let you make it larger?
It may be that you need to adjust some other parameter, as well,
to increase the pool of memory that contains save_size.
If you haven't tried adjusting that parameter, do! As root, edit
/etc/texmf.cnf, increase the value for save_size, and run
``texconfig init''.
If that doesn't work, then you may have to figure out what other
parameter needs to be adjusted -- perhaps extra_mem_top or
extra_mem_bottom (anyone who knows for sure, chime in!). There
are comments in /etc/texmf.cnf that may help you work it out, as
well -- they talk about uisng ``\tracingstats=2'' in your TeX file
to see where and how memory is used, or TeXing memtest.tex (which
may only be in the source).
