No, you don’t need expert mode to access a shell. You can access a shell any time during installation by typing ALT + Cursor Keys.

At that point, you can execute the steps of Adrian's workaround.  When you are finished with that, you can switch back to the installer menu by  hitting <alt>-F1 . That works in normal mode, too.
