Thank you, it worked after some pain.
At first it complained about not finding a file whose name
~/cdda with some strange characters... then it played but soundlessly,
and launching it from the console shows it looks first for arts, then
for oss, then for esd... isn't that strange for a Gnome app?
Finally, after an upgrade to the 0.99 version at unstable, it
worked. Until now, much less ugly than XMMS, and Gnome2 besides. So
I guess I have one less Gnome1 app to worry about!
