yes

not that way, it is not a good idea, booting into single user mode also is
not a good idea, although does the trick as michael suggested, the best way
is to change the default runlevel

edit /etc/inittab and where it says 

# The default runlevel.
id:3:initdefault:

or something (maybe 5) change it to a 2

that stops xdm starting on bootup when xdm is installed
