Should work - 2.4 has proper PCI resource management builtin, no need to
shoehorn it onto the atyfb driver as in 2.2.

Sounds about right.

Uncheck the 'no video driver' by all means. mclk has got nothing to do
with acceleration. I use 89 but that may not even be necessary anymore (a
year and half ago the default mclk would result in a flaky display). If
your display looks OK with 71 just leave it at that.

fbdev isn't unuseable for me (though I switched shadowfb off with it).

There's something fundamentally wrong with your XF86Config. Is that the
only error (EE) you get?
