Something is odd here.  Is /dev/dsp not visible from your user account or is
it also missing to root? as root what does cat /dev/sndstat show?

What kernel are you using? Y'know uname -r

As far rolling your own kernel, when you get to the sound part, just select
dmasound and thats it no IRQ etc to type in.
