Indeed.

A 6.3.4-1 from bpo complains about Base not being installed when I try
to do what you did on a system where I deinstalled libreoffice-base
first.
A 6.4.0 crashes, as you say.

It should not have changed considerably.

It depends. As long as the internal db comes into play there's Java
involved.

What is supposed to be your data source?

What about libreoffice-base?

(That's why libreoffice depends on base, and that is why
libreoffice-writer suggests -base.)

What happens if you install -base? Maybe select a specific driver so you
don't get -sdbc-hsqldb (Java-based, thus depending on Java) per
default...
