Obviously specifying a non-existant version doesn't make sense in anyway.

Then you should have filed this as a "spell-checking of UTF-8 files in Emacs doesn't work" bug instead of a "here's a patch" "bug" :)

I haven't (yet) read your URL so don't assume I know that this is a
bug from just what you wrote here.
