It sounds like something in your user files in ~/.openoffice will have
caused the problem, and those won't be affected by a package
purge/reinstall cycle.

Hmm, running as root regererates the registry cache - maybe there was a
problem with that cache somehow, although I would have expected other
people to report it, too.

We need someone to attempt to reproduce this sometime and find out what
is causing the crash.
