Yikes; at least we'd like to know the current state of problems.
What kind of protocol is that?

At least that's something worth documenting. It sounds like there is
still a lot of upstream work to be done in video field.

Audio on the other hand seems to have mostly settled for ALSA and jack.
(I'm not sure if portaudio is gone?)

Yes, this is too bad. It might be nice to get something implemented.
A symbollic link for DV capture device, and someone to configure it
looking at its device characteristics.

I suspect there will be more USB2 devices in the future, using
something similar to usb-dvb. I'm not quite sure if they use v4l2
protocol, although they are available on the same Hg
repository. Hmm...
