I think I am getting similar symptoms when I tried to setup a test
wheezy server *without* your patch.

Version: 3.6.1+dfsg-1~deb7u1

I can see the login page fine, but after login I only get a blank
screen. Or timeout errors. Nothing is logged that I can see.

I can't help think that maybe I have got something wrong, but I can't
think of anything obvious.
