Hello again! > Hmmm didn't think about this. That's a great idea though. And how do I > restore the files now ? Say my HDD crashes, do I need to reinstall Debian > and then run a reverse rsync or something like this ? ok, in that situation, i just set up a new debian-system and copy back the essential stuff. but i think, just partitioning the new harddrive, copying everything back where it belongs and then setup booting (adjust lilo, fstab) should also work. rsync - the way i (and my script) use it, copies anything properly (userrights, symlinks etc). check out the manpage of rsync to find the options you like. the main advantage of rsync is backup speed due to the fact that it only copies modified data (of course it is also usefull when backing up via rsync). if you want something like ghost, i also recommend you (like John Schmidt in his reply) to use dd (diskdump) or partimage. partimage has the advantage to only copy the used blocks on the hd which also speeds up a bit. partimage is included on knoppix, dd also. ah - i forgot: what i do additionally is backing up a list of all installed debian packages of the machine - that way i can just setup a minimal debian system and then install all other packages using that list (in gurkeback this is done by "dpkg --get-selections"). hope that helps, kind regards, Pascal Mainini -- Pascal Mainini ------- open-minded computer artist encrypted mail preferred ----- http://www.impressionet.ch/crypto/ more? -> www.impressionet.ch --- artist? -> www.guerk.li jabber? - gurke@swissjabber.ch
