Hmmm, not true. I get reproducable a kernel crash (typing in most important
info, please find crash data screen shot at
http://valentijn.sessink.nl/temp/vmware-knoppix.gif) :

 printing eip:
c019d337
*pde = 00010063
*pte = 0342c000
Oops: 0002

System.map says:

c019d458 T atapi_output_bytes
... and further:
c01c2bb8 t idescsi_input_buffers
c01c2c78 t idescsi_output_buffers

Using "hdc=ide-cdrom" seems not to work (why?). Now I've tried to use an
image as CD-ROM device, but that also crashes the kernel. What's going on
here, anyone any idea?

This is the 28-08-2002 Knoppix version.
