Should I just randomly pick an open bug and try fix it?

Seems to be a very reasonable way to start.

Should I try adopt some abandoned packages?

Adopting packages is also a good idea - preferably those who have
a high popcon and those which are used by yourself. A very nice
utility (which is frequently overlooked - I detected it myself only
10 monthes ago) is

    wnpp-alert (in package devscripts)

Just try it and find your target. ;-)

Should I take a look at WNPP and try package something new?

For the moment I'd consider some QA work as more needed than
injecting something new - except if you are missing something
RFPed very heavy.

Is there something specific I could start helping with?

I subscribed this list only to help out Eclipse packaging a bit.
I'm no Java expert but I can do QA checks of packaging or sponsor
packages if needed.

Should I coordinate my activities with somebody or should I "play solo"?

Please coordinate!

I'm looking forward hearing your tips and ideas :)

Hope this helps

       Andreas.
