Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that. 

I've tentatively concluded one of my big problems is antenna, for
while I can copy signals over 700 miles (often Eastern Europe, South
America, etc.), I get no signals at all less than that, and my
location and the direction of the signals I get suggests I should get
a lot of nearby signals, but I don't.
