ax25 is compiled, now what?

Greetings folks:

I have been trying to compile a 2.6 kernel, but at last, I decided this beast
is beyond my compiling/module-loading skills and decided to build the latest
2.4.23 kernel instead. I've built the kernel and added support for my baycom
modem (serial port). My question; is there a simple way to get this unit up
and running with readily available terminal software from Debian's archive?
I've googled a bit, but I don't see anything that I can basically plug-n-play
with.

What are recommendations of the group regarding this baycom (1200 baud) unit?
Are there any good quickie HOWTO's I can draw from?

Ultimately, I might find the latest JNOS code and build it, but I would still
like a terminal program that I can just turn on and do tests (for later on).

Thank you. 73
