Thank you all. The message from Daniel Pittman led me to a fix for by problem, which was (seemed?) to be a MTU problem. Interestingly various values gave strange errors until I arrived at the BT-recommended value. This configuration detail had been forgotten. Thanks again; we seem to be alive now. ==John ffitch
