Yes, a bit annoying. However I don't think the nis package can do anything
about this, these are more dpkg problems (correct me if I'm wrong).

.. Because there is a configuration file there, that gets purged later.

This probably happened because you started dpkg --purge in one of the
directories that got removed.

Shall we close this bug report or redirect it to dpkg ?
