: IMHO, dpkg-multicd has many other problems. It doesn't do package
: ordering, it doesn't handle predependencies (trying to install netscape
...
: make another install run in dselect. Not for the average user)...

Before somebody starts to patch:
Please try dpkg-multicd2 from
    ftp://pu.schlittermann.de/pub/people/heiko/debian/dpkg-multicd/

It is compatible with dpkg-multicd (yes, I'm the orignal author of
the dpkg-multicd package ...) and has probably not as many bugs
as the first hack.

: does an ordered installation. Of course that means the cache directory
: has to be on a big partition, but making an ordered installation from a
: multi-CD set, without changing CDs several times and without copying the
: needed packages to a single medium is "non-trivial". :-)

The multicd2 methods is designed to require a minimum count change
operations ...

After all it's clear that there must be a general solution ... working
with apt(cdrom) and native dselect ...
