Thank you. I think I half-realised that, if only because the menu item
in the installer is "Detect network hardware".

Clarifying it for myself: D-I takes care of offering to install firmware
for network cards. The newly booted kernel takes care the remainder of
the hardware, including getting something displayed on the screen. The
user can then choose to install non-free firmware if she wishes to.
