I see the tasksel way is pretty nice, but to be useful your sources e.g.
metapackages should already be in Debian/ Ubuntu right?
The tasksel control file is created according to the packages available
in the target distribution (in the same manner as the metapackages).
[Perhaps I'm missing the point of your question.]

Or is there a
easy way to fix this with a minimal install cd / netinstall or do you
have to make your custom iso then?
There is no need for an extra iso - just build for your target
distribution which can in principle point to a private Packages file of
a private distribution - that's why I assume that it should work for
Ubuntu and the result will be the set of packages in Ubuntu. So it
should work for any other Debian derivative.

Hi,

It would be nice to be able to install the metapackages (via tasksel) during installation of the distro. I was installing the Ubuntu minimal iso cd and saw the options to install metapackages for edubuntu etc. It would be nice if it would be possible to choose also mine metapackages there...
