initrd-tools relied on an /proc/scsi ouput that is gone since 2.6.12.
it is phased out in favour of new initramfs generators.

use initramfs-tools - generates newstyle initramfs images.
invocation of mkinitramfs is similar to mkinitrd,
even if the usage of update-initramfs is preferred.
yaird is the second alternative.
