more linux-image-2.6 tries
well this may be mundane and boring with the
excitement over the cross-compilers and aranym
(congratulations, looks very hope inspiring there)
i am still working at booting 2.6.17-2. in case
you missed my previous mail i have a couple
quadras now, one at least is running, the 630.
i updated my etch cd with jigdo that was a couple
months old and then update the necessary package
to dependencies of the kernel (about 13 of them).
that did not help with trying to boot 2.6.17, i still the
following problems:
1) udev starting up complaints:
udevd udevd [770] inotify_init failed: no such file or directory
2) ide drive loading module complaints ( i am not
using it for linux, i am using an external scsi but i
wish i could and i hope it is not disrupting things more,
since it does work in sarge) like a whole page or more errors.
3) even though in this kernel config says adbs are all
y and sonic is n. i still have no good adb. that is it
boots through to login prompt but i can't login due
to bad keymap. improved just a little - before it was
completely locked, now i get scrambled keymap.
the only thing i could find that worked was command/
option/power to reboot.
part II
i am setting up local (sub-)network. i am pretty confused at
this. i got by using ifconfig and a cross over cable to
ping my powermac from either direction. i am installing
now openssh. so if i try that kernal again or another
2.6 version, maybe i can ssh in to shutdown gracefully...
(put in as 192.168.0.255 subnet with powermac as
hopefully maybe gateway to internet that is 192.168.1.255)
another idea i had was to pull the nic card -- maybe it is
not just sonic that conflicts with adb ?
p.s. jigdo is pretty cool. if you have a funky wireless place
like mine with flaky internet it goes back and retries until
it gets all the file(s) (basicly it uses the regular package sites
to make up a cd image, all you download from the cd itself
is a couple templates), also it reuses as much of the cd as
has not changed (here about 25%). also you have a much
greater choice of mirrors.
brian
-- also i saw/picked up a 2.6.8-mac kernal package. i could actually
run most etch software (not udev) with 2.6.8 on powerpc. also
i notice that things like xorg say they were compiled with that
(even though it is running under 2.6.17 ). no tried it yet. this is
standard sarge kernel for powerpc, but can use with etch, too.
